J.S. Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D Minor was originally written for keyboard. The fiery fantasy, with its turbulent melodic contours and intense technical demands, rendered it a favorite piece of Romantic piano virtuosos like Lizst, and it has maintained its popularity ever since. This arrangement, transcribed from the piano part by Zoltán Kodály and edited by William Primrose, shows off the viola as a virtuosic instrument.
