Carl G. Becker Sr. Violin, Chicago, 1940

Crafted in 1940 by the renowned Carl G. Becker Sr., this exceptional violin stands as a testament to one of America’s most revered 20th-century makers. Carl Becker’s instruments are prized for their refined workmanship, radiant tonal palette, and enduring stability — qualities that have made his violins coveted by discerning musicians and collectors alike.

This particular example embodies Becker’s dedication to the classic Stradivari model, with a graceful arching, clean purfling, and a luminous varnish that has matured beautifully over the decades. The sound is characteristically powerful yet nuanced, offering warmth and depth in the lower register with a singing, brilliant upper range — equally suited to the concert stage or the intimate recital hall.

Carl G. Becker Sr. worked closely with his son, Carl F. Becker Jr., establishing a lineage of violin making that continues to influence American luthiery today. Violins from this period are particularly sought-after for their rarity and for representing Becker at the height of his powers.
