This 1932 violin from the German workshop of Heinrich Theodore Heberlein Jr. is a fine example of the multi-generational Heberlein family workmanship. Modeled after a Stradivarius violin, this instrument has a dark, resonant sound that blends easily; perfect for a chamber musician or fine instrument collector.

The back is of two pieces of maple cut on the quarter of narrow flaming extending downward from the center joint. The ribs and scroll are of similar maple. The top is of two pieces of spruce cut on the quarter of medium width grain widening slightly at the flanks. The varnish is red-brown over a golden ground.

Born in 1843, Heinrich Theodor Heberlein Jr. was immersed in the art of violin making throughout his life. He first worked under his father, the respected Markneukirchen maker, Carl August Heberlein and subsequently moved to Leipzig to work for Bausch and then to Hanover where he studied with August Reichers. Heinrich established his own shop in 1863 and also taught at the Markneukirchen Violin Making School until his retirement in 1897. His sons Paul Wilhelm and Albert Theodor inherited the workshop and continued to use their father’s name for violins produced there.
