Meyers-Halvarson Violin, Nashville, MI, 1962

A fine violin by respected 20th century American maker, Anders Halvarson. This violin’s gentle and warm tone make it ideal for chamber music. Beautiful quarter sawn two-piece maple back of medium width flaming, ascending slightly from the center joint. Medium-grained spruce top. The varnish is red-orange over a golden ground, with subtle shading.

Anders Halvarson was born in Sweden in 1900, immigrating to the United States in 1923. He worked in the William Lewis shop in Chicago, receiving the highest level of training from the revered American violinmaker, Carl Becker, Sr. He later settled permanently in the village of Nashville, Michigan, bringing with him his outstanding supply of fine-quality European wood. There, he owned a music store and continued making violins until his death, in 1971. Halvarson’s workmanship is first rate and very highly regarded to this day by makers that trained with him. Although he is not well-known, his body of work leaves little doubt that he was one of the finest American violinmakers of the 20th century.
