Sliding Fingers is a gentle introduction to shifting and third position that is intended for the first or second year student. Teaching these skills early on in the learning process helps to relax the hand, improve arm and hand posture, and correct instrument support. The first half of the book is a collection of short studies written in Evelyn AvSharian’s classic oversized notation. The studies highlight shifting on one finger for fingers 1, 2, and 3. Finger substitutions is also introduced. The second half of the book is a collection of easy and already familiar songs that are now played in third position. They are accompanied by workbook-style problems.
