L'histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale), composed in 1918, was originally scored for a small and rather unusual ensemble, ostensibly because of the shortage of available musicians during World War I. That ensemble, a septet, consisted of violin, bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet/trumpet, trombone, and percussion. The storyline of the stage work follows a violin-playing soldier who sells his violin to the devil in exchange for a mysterious book that promises to bring him great wealth and happiness, but this unknowing encounter with the devil instead leads him to ruin.
